Frontier Pitts is excited to introduce our next stage in HVM Bridge Protection with the Terra Lunar 180 Bridge Bollard. This exciting Expansion Joint (EJ) solution combines our shallowest bollard, the Lunar Bollard, and our popular Terra 180 Swing Barrier. The system has been tested to IWA 14 stopping 7.2t at 30mph at a 30° angle, with a maximum beam length of 5200mm.

Terra Lunar 180 beam is the only protection system to swing open and closed without having to be dismantled, allowing authorised access through the bollard line whilst allowing for lateral movement of up to 150mm across the bridge expansion joint.

Bridges around the World are vital to our transportation network but have already been subjected to vehicle attacks by terrorists, with users including pedestrians and cyclists becoming extremely vulnerable. Frontier Pitts has created the Lunar 180 bridge system that is able to sit within the bridge kerb structure utilising an ultra-shallow foundation of just 80mm. The beam of the Terra 180 Swing Barrier allows the system to be installed and protect even the bridges expansion joint where foundation footings are not possible.

The Terra Lunar 180 Bridge Bollard Beam EJ system was impact tested to IWA 14 at Horiba MIRA stopping a 7.2t vehicle travelling at 30mph with a shallow attack angle of 30°. Due to the energy absorption within the structure, the result saw minimal penetration and the system successfully bringing the vehicle to a complete stop within the aperture. This means the bollard system successfully protected the pathway and cycleway as there was no encroachment by the vehicle. The Terra Lunar Bollard Beam EJ system received limited damage on impact and can simple be replaced with a new 180 beam within 15 minutes.

The challenge of designing and installing a bollard system to protect a bridge has its own set of unique problems as the not only are the foundations extremely limiting, but the structural integrity of the bridge deck cannot be compromised. A unique connection between the bollards using flexible linkages allows for bridge movement and expansion. This impact test also included load cells underneath the product to record the load transfer of the product on impact, providing structural engineers with key data.

Another part of the challenge is the appearance and look of the protective systems. Temporary solutions that have been installed on bridges have been unpopular in London as they have been described as bulky and not in keeping with the decorative look and feel of London’s ornate architecture and heritage. Frontier Pitts Terra Lunar 180 Bridge Beam system has been designed to blend into any surroundings.

The Terra Lunar Bridge Beam system is designed to fit lengths of pathways and pavements. Although designed to protect bridges, this ultra-shallow bollard solution can also be used for other inner-city areas, pathways, linear walkways and cycle lanes where there is limited foundation depth or other obstacles where no foundation footings are available.

IWA 14-1 equipment is required to be installed at 1200mm between upright bollard faces to meet IWA 14-2 guidelines.

Reflective Banding

Another option for the finish of the bollard is reflective banding. The reflective banding can be deemed a necessity to ensure the bollard stands out from the architecture of the landscape and/or building. Bollard banding is available in a range of colours and dimensions, with option on the number of bands on the bollard, and position (top of bollard, top and bottom of bollard). The colour of the banding can also reflect the branding of the site company.

Personalised Engraving

In addition to reflective banding on the static bollards to incorporate the sites corporate brand image, Frontier Pitts can also provide corporate engraving on the stainless steel bollard sleeve.
