Rising bollards are retractable security barriers designed to control vehicle access while maintaining a clear and unobtrusive environment when not in use. Installed at entry and exit points, they rise from ground level to restrict access and retract when authorized vehicles are permitted to pass.
Frontier Pitts manufactures automatic rising bollards designed for perimeter security and controlled access applications, offering solutions suitable for a wide range of commercial and secure environments.

Rising Bollards for Vehicle Access Control

Automatic rising bollards are commonly used to manage vehicle access to private roads, commercial premises, secure sites and controlled zones. Their retractable design allows normal traffic flow when lowered while providing a physical barrier when raised.
These systems are typically selected where a balance is required between security, accessibility and visual discretion, particularly in locations where permanent barriers are not suitable.

Impact tested bollards: PAS 68 & IWA 14

Some automatic rising bollards are independently tested to recognized impact standards such as PAS 68 and IWA 14-1. These standards assess a bollard’s ability to resist vehicle impact under controlled test conditions, based on defined vehicle weights and speeds.
PAS 68 is a UK-based specification, while IWA 14-1 is the internationally recognized standard that has replaced PAS 68 for hostile vehicle impact testing. Certification provides reassurance that the product has been tested to a recognized benchmark.

Types of Rising Bollards Available

Rising bollards are available in different configurations depending on operational requirements, frequency of use and the level of automation needed. Automatic, semi-automatic and manual solutions are commonly specified to suit varying site conditions, traffic volumes and access control needs. Selecting the appropriate type helps ensure reliable operation while aligning with the practical and security requirements of the location.

  • Automatic rising bollards
Automatic rising bollards are powered systems that operate via hydraulic or electro-mechanical mechanisms. They are designed to be raised and lowered automatically and can be controlled remotely.
These bollards are typically used in locations with regular vehicle movement, where controlled access and ease of operation are required.
  • Semi-automatic and manual bollards
Semi-automatic and manual bollards provide an alternative solution for sites with lower traffic volumes or where bollards are raised less frequently. While operation differs from fully automatic systems, they offer similar physical access control in appropriate use cases.

Key Features and Characteristics

Automatic rising bollards are designed to integrate into a wider access control strategy. They can be operated via control panels, remote devices or access control systems, depending on site requirements.
Their retractable design allows them to remain flush with the ground when lowered, reducing visual impact and enabling use in areas where aesthetics or space constraints are important. Construction materials and finishes can vary depending on the product specification.
